CORRECTION - TIME: Preschool adding days, full-day session

Ballard County Preschool-Head Start students will begin their year on Aug. 10 – for the first time, on the same as all other Ballard students in grades K-12. The school also is adding one full-day session for qualifying 4-year-olds, said Director Terri Wehmeyer.

“We are trying to meet the needs of the community,” she said. The full-day session will help families who are trying to find or pay for daycare, and the same start date means all the children in a household will start at the same time. She added that she already had contacted families of all qualifying full-day students.

Start times at BCPS also will be modified, Wehmeyer added. The full-day session will run from 8:15 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Morning preschool classes will be from 8:15 to noon, and afternoon classes will be from noon to 3:45. Regular split-day students still will have two-way transportation; full-day students will be offered one-way transportation only.

Full-day regulations require 1,020 hours, so the number of days had to increase to 136 days of instruction from the original 128 days, and 30 minutes was added to each day, Wehmeyer explained. The last day for BCPS students (barring interruptions) will be May 11.
