Ballard Memorial High School’s FFA chapter was among the clubs that received donations from River Valley AgCredit last week. The $6,000 will be used for repair and finishing in both of the chapter greenhouses, and to automate them for a hydroponics system.

This year’s Young Leaders in Action team at Ballard County Middle School is (from left) Allison Enfinger, Nevaeh Yates, Jarrod Abernathy, and Bryce Steward. Students are selected for this regional program to choose and work with local leaders on an issue that affects either their school or their community.

In the 2019 legislative session, the Kentucky General Assembly voted to make all public school property smoke-free by July 1, 2020. Following this change in state law (KRS 438.345), the Ballard County Board of Education voted earlier this year to implement the new rules on the state’s 2020 date.

While Ballard’s buildings have been smoke-free for some time, new signs have gone up around exterior spaces on campus, including Bomber Field for football, and the baseball and softball fields.   

Annual Memorial Bowl is set for Friday night; veterans to be honored
The Ballard Bombers will host Trigg County at the annual Memorial Bowl this Friday (Sept. 13) at Bomber Field.  As always, all veterans will receive free admission to the game, and they will be honored before kickoff at 6:40 p.m. The football boosters also will provide a free meal for all veterans in attendance.

Award-winning veteran coach Jimmy Long has been hired as Ballard Memorial’s new head baseball coach.

Long coached multiple sports at Heath High School, compiling a 193-62 record in baseball from 2002-2008. His teams won the 2nd District championship every one of those years, the 1st Region championship five times, and the All “A” Classic state championship in 2004.

Citizens Deposit Bank has installed an automatic teller machine in the lobby of Ballard Memorial High School’s gym. Students and staff can access the machine during the day when time permits, and visitors to games and events at the Green Palace also can take advantage of the convenience. Use of CDB cards is free; other cards are accepted, but customer fees from those banks may apply.  
FFA members take honors at Kentucky State Fair FFA members take honors at Kentucky State Fair
Members of the Ballard Memorial High School chapter of Future Farmers of America took top-three honors at the Kentucky State Fair recently.

Junior Tinslee Williams took first place in the wheat crop competition, and junior Zoe Wilson took third place in the student photography competition.

Members Evan Cox, Byron Hack, Williams, and Kylee Bodell also worked in the WAVE River Counties booth in the Pride of the Counties hall.  

O'Connor hired as varsity softball coach O'Connor hired as varsity softball coach
Bobby O’Connor has been hired as Ballard Memorial’s new head softball coach. He also will assist new Ballard County Middle School softball coach Scott Alexander this fall.

O’Connor is no stranger to Ballard sports. He was assistant BCMS football coach under LeToun Bledsoe for the 2014 team that won the divisional championship. O’Connor also was the girls’ basketball coach for three years, boys’ seventh-grade basketball coach for two years, and assistant softball coach for two years, all at BCMS. He was Ballard Rec League coordinator for softball, baseball and T-ball for three years, and currently is finishing up his seventh season as Ballard Bombshells’ summer league coach.  

'Meet the Bombers' set for Friday
Meet the Bombers will be held Friday, Aug. 16, at 7 p.m. at Bomber Field (behind Ballard County Elementary School). Admission is free, and the concession stand will be open.
