Time changing on first doors open at all schools
Doors at all district schools - Ballard County Elementary, Ballard County Middle and Ballard Memorial High schools - will not open until 7:15 a.m. this year. This includes the BCMS and BMHS gyms, and all other doors.  
BCPS changing pick-up, drop-off procedures
To improve student safety and parent experience, the pick-up and drop-off procedures at Ballard County Preschool - Head Start are changing this year when BCPS opens on Aug. 27. All regular-day drop-offs will take place behind the preschool, as well as the morning and noontime pick-ups. The ONLY pick-up that still will be in front of the building is the 3:30 p.m. pick-up. We want this transition to be as smooth and easy as possible for our students and parents.  
District outlines safety measures
Ballard County Schools has a number of safety measures in place throughout the district to keep students, staff and visitors protected. A recent media story only listed a few of those existing measures, but here is a more complete list: 
Sheffer named new principal at BCES Sheffer named new principal at BCES
The Site-Based Decision-Making Council at Ballard County Elementary School has named Chris Sheffer its successful candidate to be the school’s principal, effective July 1.

The Ballard County native had been assistant principal Morgan Elementary School since 2011, including work as a positive behavior coach there. Sheffer was principal at Carlisle County Middle School from 2009-11, and a teacher, athletic director, interventionist and tutor at Ballard County Middle School from 2002-09. He also was a teacher at BCES from 2001-02.

Ballard County Schools has named Terri Wehmeyer its successful candidate for district director of special education and Ballard County Preschool coordinator, effective July 1.

She had been director of special education and preschool at Crittenden County for the last year, and dean of students at the Grand Chain Learning Center/JAMP for the year before that. Wehmeyer also taught at Lone Oak High School for six years, and spent four years as a special education teacher at Paducah Middle School. She has been employed in the educational setting since 1999.  

Ballard County Schools to participate in Summer Food Service Program; free meals available in June at several locations

NEW STOP ADDED: Ballard County Schools is participating in the Summer Food Service Program. Meals will be provided to all children without charge and are the same for all children regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability. There will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service. 
The program starts June 4 and continues through June 29, Monday through Friday. Meals will be provided on a first come, first served basis, at the sites and times as follows: 
 
BMHS grads receive over $300,000 in scholarships and awards
Ballard Memorial High School honored its outstanding students at a ceremony held at the school on May 11. Guidance counselor Renee McDermott said that graduating seniors received over $300,000 in local, college and university scholarships. 
BMHS graduates 78 members of the Class of 2018
Ballard Memorial High School observed its 66th commencement exercises on May 18 in the gymnasium here. The Class of 2017 ended with 78 graduates.

The valedictorian was Meghan Walker. The salutatorian was Ross Jones. There were 12 additional honor graduates: Connor Brooking, Candice Durr, Rianah Fields, Peter Green, Kameron Howle, Hannah Lee, Lindsey Miller, Samuel Paul, Owen Renfrow, Leah Shelley, Maddison Waddell, and Madison Williams.  

Outstanding students recognized at BMHS Awards Day program
Ballard Memorial High School held its Awards Day program on May 11, honoring student achievements and those students who strived for excellence in and out of the classroom. Student council president Lindsey Miller served as the master of ceremonies. 
Birney appointed to represent District 3 on the Ballard Board of Education Birney appointed to represent District 3 on the Ballard Board of Education
Kentucky Commissioner of Education Stephen Pruitt has appointed Brandon Birney of LaCenter to fill the current vacancy in District 3 on the Ballard County Board of Education. The appointment takes immediate effect upon Birney being duly sworn in at the Aug. 22 special called board meeting (moved from its original Aug. 28 date), and expires at the end of 2018. He replaces long-time member Haskell Sheeks, who resigned at the end of June.
