In the 2019 legislative session, the Kentucky General Assembly voted to make all public school property smoke-free by July 1, 2020. Following this change in state law (KRS 438.345), the Ballard County Board of Education voted earlier this year to implement the new rules on the state's 2020 date.

While Ballard's buildings have been smoke-free for some time, new signs have gone up around exterior spaces on campus, including Bomber Field for football, and the baseball and softball fields.   

Bomber Back-to-School Bash set for Saturday, Aug. 10
     The 12th annual “Bomber Back-to-School Bash” will be held Saturday, Aug. 10, from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. All students in the district will register for class, receive orientation information at all of Ballard’s schools. (A complete schedule of class orientations accompanies this story.) A district-wide safety update will be held at 11 a.m., and all parents are invited.

In addition to students and parents, the public is invited to a health and community resource fair in the Ballard Memorial High School gym at 3561 Paducah Road, Barlow, from 8 to 11 a.m. Family Focus (elementary school) and Teen Focus (middle and high schools) will have school supplies in the gym’s concession area for those who qualify.   

Murray Head Start seeking family service worker for Ballard County
This position is program services position responsible for the delivery of family services in Ballard County according to federal and state regulations. The successful candidate will directly supervise assigned Family Advocates and works collaboratively with management staff and school district partnership personnel. The position requires a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in social work or a related field, and experience working with families is preferred. The successful candidate must have strong organizational and communication skills and the ability to work independently.   
Time changing on first doors open at all schools
Doors at all district schools - Ballard County Elementary, Ballard County Middle and Ballard Memorial High schools - will not open until 7:15 a.m. this year. This includes the BCMS and BMHS gyms, and all other doors.  
Sheffer named new principal at BCES Sheffer named new principal at BCES
The Site-Based Decision-Making Council at Ballard County Elementary School has named Chris Sheffer its successful candidate to be the school’s principal, effective July 1.

The Ballard County native had been assistant principal Morgan Elementary School since 2011, including work as a positive behavior coach there. Sheffer was principal at Carlisle County Middle School from 2009-11, and a teacher, athletic director, interventionist and tutor at Ballard County Middle School from 2002-09. He also was a teacher at BCES from 2001-02.  

BCPS changing pick-up, drop-off procedures
To improve student safety and parent experience, the pick-up and drop-off procedures at Ballard County Preschool - Head Start are changing this year when BCPS opens on Aug. 27. All regular-day drop-offs will take place behind the preschool, as well as the morning and noontime pick-ups. The ONLY pick-up that still will be in front of the building is the 3:30 p.m. pick-up. We want this transition to be as smooth and easy as possible for our students and parents.  
Wehmeyer named new director of special education, preschool coordinator Wehmeyer named new director of special education, preschool coordinator
Ballard County Schools has named Terri Wehmeyer its successful candidate for district director of special education and Ballard County Preschool coordinator, effective July 1.

She had been director of special education and preschool at Crittenden County for the last year, and dean of students at the Grand Chain Learning Center/JAMP for the year before that. Wehmeyer also taught at Lone Oak High School for six years, and spent four years as a special education teacher at Paducah Middle School. She has been employed in the educational setting since 1999.  

2018-19 BCPS-Head Start registration dates set in March
Ballard County Preschool/Head Start will hold spring registration for new students on March 2 and March 9 for children who are or will be 3 or 4 years old by Aug. 1, 2018.

All registrations are by appointment only, and will be held in the fellowship hall of First Baptist Church, 421 Broadway, LaCenter. Appointments may be made from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Parents/Guardians are asked to please call 270-665-8400, ext. 2100, to schedule an appointment; children will be given their developmental screenings while adults are completing the registration packet.  

Adult Education now offering GED classes at Barlow City Library, and Tuesday evening at Adult Ed office
Ballard County Adult Education now is offering GED classes at the Barlow City Library on Wednesdays from 1-3 p.m. The library is located in the City Hall Annex (old City Hall), behind the City Hall building at 139 N. Fourth St., Barlow.
